Rolling out a Fibre Network
Planning
Before we can begin physical trenching work in an area, we need to plan where our core route cable will run, where the cables that will connect each home will be placed and where we will place each manhole. We need to do this for every metre that we physically construct. We then need to submit this plan to the required government institution in order to get permission to undertake the project.
Trenching
After our plan has been approved by all concerned parties, we can then begin the work of laying our fibre. We start the work by first digging up the sidewalk and then laying the empty ducts that will make up the core route cables, as well as the duct that will go to each home. This is performed on the same day so that we can fill the trench back in. During this time our manholes are also installed to allow us to connect homes to our network.
Reinstatement
The moment we are certain that all the duct integrity has been maintained through the trenching process, we can then reinstate the tar, paving or unpaved ground and return the road at a bare minimum to its original state but usually to a state better than we found it.
Blowing the fibre
After the empty ducts have been laid (and duct integrity has been vetted) we can then start blowing the fibre through the ducts. We use high pressure air to push the fibre through the empty ducts between manholes. We can then connect the fibre to other manholes by joining two sections of fibre to each other. This is done by fusing the fibre (glass) strands to each other.
Fibre for Single Dwelling Homes
Grey wall box placement
In order to be able to connect customers efficiently (without having to dig up the road every time we want to connect someone), we install a wall box on each single dwelling home that we pass. Before we place the wall box on your wall though, we first place a sticker where we think it should go. While the sticker is on your wall you have the opportunity to move it to where you think the box would fit best. If you don’t manage to move the sticker while it is on your wall, you can still have us move the wall box, just give us a call and we’ll sort it out for you.
Getting Connected
Throughout this construction process we encourage you to order a service through one of our Service providers. To help you make that decision we have a page where you can find the best package for your needs.
Fibre for Apartment Buildings
When it comes to apartment buildings and complexes we like to engage with the decision makers so that we can find a fibre solution to best suit the needs of everyone who stays there.
Visiting the building/complex
In order to get an idea of what solutions are currently in the complex, we like to conduct a visit. This visit takes the form of an explanation of what we do and how we do it, as well as an opportunity to take pictures so that we can start our planning. We do this as every building is different, and each building has unique concerns.
Completing a Detailed Site Plan
Once the visit is complete, it is then up to our infrastructure team to put together a plan that addresses the needs of the building. We complete this plan and send it to the decision makers to comment on, and approve.
Landowner Approval
If everyone is happy then a Landowner Consent Form is signed that outlines the scope of work that will be carried out, as well as what you can expect from us, and what we ask of the complex in return.
Costs
It costs the building nothing for us to construct the core fibre network. The only costs are incurred by the tenants or owners who would like to take up a fibre service.
